Feast of obedience

The Golden Feast is a large-scale mixed-media relief painting by Felicia Mandigo that presents a theatrical banquet as an allegory of wealth, power, hierarchy, excess, and obedience. Created with mortar mix and acrylic paint, the work combines painting with pronounced sculptural texture, giving its figures, objects, and symbolic elements a physical presence that extends beyond the traditional flat canvas. At the center of the composition sits a monumental gilded figure presiding over an abundant feast. Crowned and formally dressed figures surround the table, while golden vessels, elaborate food, burning candelabras, and currency suspended overhead create an atmosphere of extraordinary wealth and privilege. In stark contrast, a mass of reaching figures occupies the lower portion of the composition, physically separated from the abundance displayed above them. The arrangement establishes a deliberate visual hierarchy. Gold, food, money, crowns, and ceremonial objects become symbols of status and control, while the contrasting figures below introduce themes of inequality, dependence, submission, and the human desire for access to power and prosperity. The title The Golden Feast reinforces this tension: what initially appears to be a celebration of abundance can also be read as a commentary on who is permitted to participate in that abundance—and what may be demanded of those seeking a place at the table.
